The web portal ‘manuscripta.at - Medieval Manuscripts in Austria’ is the central reference and research tool for medieval manuscripts in Austria. It is scientifically maintained and continuously developed in close co-operation with the libraries holding the manuscripts.
The aim of the portal is to provide long-term, sustainable and location-independent access to medieval and selected modern manuscripts through standardised recording, systematic indexing and digital provision. In addition to content analyses - where available - information on provenance, binding, watermark analyses, text and book decoration as well as digital copies, bibliographical references and searchable full texts are provided.
The technical infrastructure of manuscripta.at enables continuous maintenance, validation and expansion of the database. The portal is currently in a phase of intensive conceptual and functional development. This includes the integration of new tools, the implementation of interoperable interfaces and the integration of an IIIF viewer to improve the display and utilisation of digital images.
These measures will not only further establish manuscripta.at as a central research tool for the Austrian manuscript tradition, but also increase the visibility, research and communication of medieval manuscript cultures in Austria in an international context.
