Ziel des 1991 von der Österreichischen Akademie der Wissenschaften gegründeten Instituts für Kultur- und Geistesgeschichte Asiens ist die längerfristige Erforschung der Kulturen Asiens in den Wissenschaftsdisziplinen Indologie, Tibetologie, Sinologie, Japanologie, Buddhismuskunde, Religionswissenschaft und Philosophie.
