CMC and the Department of Sociology at the University of York are currently making arrangements for a symposium on “Digital Media, Political Polarization and Challenges to Democracy”, which is to take place in Vienna from 21 to 22 September 2017. The symposium intends to bring together internationally renowned experts from the fields of media and communication studies, politics and linguistics to explore the role of the media in today’s polarized social climate, but also the role they might play in responding to the challenges to democracy brought about by social polarization and fragmentation. Special emphasis will be paid to comparative research across time and space.
