Research activities of the DynAT research area “Internal and External Multilingualism” are based on Joshua Fishman's (1965) modified research question: Who (in Austria) writes and speaks when with whom in which contexts what "language" (variety, register, style) and why? To answer this question, both intra-lingual multilingualism (variation within the very same language) and external multilingualism (variation due to converging languages) with regard to language acquisition, language repertoires and language use of individuals is observed.
