Research activities of the DynAT research area “Internal and External Multilingualism” are based on Joshua Fishman's (1965) modified research question: Who (in Austria) writes and speaks when with whom in which contexts what "language" (variety, register, style) and why? To answer this question, both intra-lingual multilingualism (variation within the very same language) and external multilingualism (variation due to converging languages) with regard to language acquisition, language repertoires and language use of individuals is observed.

The following sub-projects conduct research on internal multilingualism with a focus on intra-individual variation within the German language:

• LexAT21 – Atlas on lexical variation in Austria in the 21st century

• ASR meets Historical Dialect Data

Cooperation/Satellite projects 

The following cooperation project in the context of the research unit Linguistics of the ACDH is closely linked to the DynAT activities and contributes to the research on external multilingualism in Austria:

• LANGMIG – Multilingualism from Below: Language Attitudes, Ideologies, and Family Language Policies among BCS-speaking Migrants in Vienna (ÖAW Seal of Excellence, PI: Sanja Miketić Subotić)
