Biography


After completing his studies of Italian law at the University of Innsbruck (honors), Gregor worked as a law clerk in the district of the Higher Regional Court of Innsbruck. In 2004, he started his academic career as a research assistant and lecturer at the Department of Italian Law at the University of Innsbruck. In 2006, he obtained his doctorate with honors with a thesis on compensation of non-pecuniary loss in comparative law and subsequently completed a legal internship at a law firm in Bolzano. From 2009 to 2010, he completed his master's degree at Yale Law School, New Haven (USA). From 2010 to 2012, he worked with Reinhard Zimmermann as a postdoctoral fellow and research assistant at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law in Hamburg and returned to the Department of Italian Law at the University in Innsbruck in 2013, where he completed his postdoctoral qualification (Habilitation) in civil law, comparative law and international private law in 2015 with a historical-comparative thesis on the protection of freedom of testation in an ageing society. The appointment as Assistant Professor (2013) was followed by that of Associate Professor in February 2017. From March 2017 until December 2019 he served as head of the Department of Italian Law. Since 2019, he has been a visiting professor at the University of Padova, since 2020 he has been member of the faculty of the PhD School of Law, Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, Milano; in 2020 he was appointed Associate Member of the Academia Internacional de Derecho de Sucesiones (Buenos Aires, Argentina), in October 2021 he was appointed full professor of private law (Universitätsprofessor für Bürgerliches Recht) at the University of Graz, Austria. In December 2021 he was appointed chair of the subgroup on succession law of the European Law Institute Special Interest Group on Family and Succession law. He has been named the holder of the Balladore Pallieri Chair at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart, Milan in the academic year 2023/24 and 2024/25. Since 2024, Gregor Christandl is the Director of the Department of Civil Law at the University of Graz. In November 2025, the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) granted Gregor Christandl a research grant of 1,5 million € for an interdisciplinary research project on “Inheriting in a Changing Society” consisting of three research teams (law, economic sociology, family sociology) at the University of Graz and the University of Vienna. In December 2025, he was named Interim Director of the Institute of European Tort Law (ETL) at the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Vienna. Since June 2025, Gregor Christandl is a member of the Academic Senate of the University of Graz. He has received numerous awards for his scientific achievements.
