Information for Guest Researchers
The Institute for European Tort Law (ETL) welcomes guest researchers from around the world who wish to pursue research in the field of tort law, civil liability, and comparative private law.
A research stay at the ETL offers a valuable opportunity for academic exchange and collaboration in an international and intellectually stimulating environment, fostering dialogue between different legal traditions and research approaches.
Who can apply?
The ETL invites applications from:
- doctoral candidates (preferably at an advanced stage),
- postdoctoral researchers,
- early-career and senior academics,
- legal scholars with a strong research interest in tort law or related fields.
Applicants should demonstrate a clear connection between their research project and the Institute’s research focus.
What we offer?
Guest researchers at the ETL benefit from:
- Access to an extensive and highly specialized library, with a strong focus on tort law in different legal systems and on comparative law;
- Intellectual exchange with the Institute’s researchers and affiliated professors;
- The opportunity to present ongoing research in an internal seminar, followed by discussion and feedback from members of the Institute;
- An international research environment at one of Europe’s leading centres for tort law research;
- Administrative guidance regarding visa requirements, where applicable;
- A certificate of participation upon completion of the research stay.
Duration and timing
- Research stays typically last from two weeks to several months.
- A minimum stay of two weeks is required.
- Applicants are encouraged to submit their application at least two months in advance of the planned start date.
For short-term visits aimed primarily at accessing the library, a simplified request procedure applies (see below).
Application process
The application procedure is simple and efficient.
Interested researchers are asked to submit:
- a short letter of motivation, outlining their research project and the purpose of the stay;
- a curriculum vitae;
- the intended duration and preferred period of the visit.
Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, subject to the Institute’s capacity.
Short-term library visits
Researchers who wish to visit the ETL for a short stay primarily to consult the library are kindly requested to contact the Institute directly by email.
Practical information
Please note that:
- The ETL does not provide funding or accommodation for guest researchers;
- Guests are responsible for organising their travel and stay;
- The Institute will, where applicable, assist with information on administrative and visa-related matters.
