For the autumn/winter campaign 2022/2023 in Kom Ombo we are looking for interested and committed students. The staff will be given the opportunity to acquire knowledge in the field of Egyptian field archaeology with in-depth training in common documentation methods, the basics of surveying techniques and finds recording, as well as to get to know the essential features of finds processing and management.
 

The excavation site

Kom Ombo is about 45 km north of Aswan and 120 km south of Luxor. The name »Kom Ombo« is derived from the ancient Egyptian name Nbyt or Nbw, »the golden one«. The modern Arabic name is »Hill of Ombo«. The city lies in the first Upper Egyptian Nome.  Written evidence is known since the First Intermediate Period, it becomes an important administrative centre of Egypt from the Ptolemaic period onwards.

The project is a new excavation project of the Cairo Branch of the Austrian Archaeological Institute  at the Austrian Academy of Sciences. The research focus is on the study of the ancient city and its hinterland, an aspect that is still quite rarely pursued systematically within the archaeology of Egypt.

Requirements

Applicants should already have some excavation experience, be in good physical condition and mentally stable. The ability to work in a team and an interest in field work or the processing of finds are also indispensable! Knowledge of the programmes frequently used in archaeology (AutoCad, ArcGis, Illustrator, ...) is an advantage.

Since, for technical reasons, registration of participants with the Egyptian authorities must take place in a timely manner, interested parties are requested to register and submit their documents by the deadline.
