XVI International Numismatic Congress

OeAI Numismatists make a great impact

07.10.2022

The Austrian Archaeological Institute participated in the XVI International Numismatic Congress from 11–16 September 2022. It takes place every six years and was held in Warsaw this year. Around 800 participants from 46 countries came together for five days of lectures in several parallel sessions and intensive discussions.

Our colleagues Wolfgang Fischer-Bossert, Patrick Fiska, Fabrizio Sinisi, Daniela Williams and Bernhard Woytek from the research group numismatics took part in the whole programme:

  • A total of 7 lectures were given, ranging from electrum issues of the 7th century BC to the trade in ancient coins between Vienna and Warsaw at the end of the 18th century;
  • 5 sessions were moderated;
  • 1 regular session and 1 double session were organised: by F. Sinisi on the »Sylloge Nummorum Parthicorum« project and by B. Woytek on the »Fontes Inediti Numismaticae Antiquae - FINA« initiative;
  • W. Fischer-Bossert was invited to speak at the round table »Samarian Coins in Light of Early Indigenous Levantine Coinages«;
  • B. Woytek and D. Williams presented the newly published anthology »Ars Critica Numaria. Joseph Eckhel and the Transformation of Ancient Numismatics« in front of a full auditorium.

Our numismatists are looking forward to participating in the next International Numismatics Congress in Frankfurt am Main in 2029!
