Grazer Weltraumforscher:innen entdecken turbulenten Dynamo in der Magnetosphäre der Erde

Ein internationales Team unter der Leitung des Instituts für Weltraumforschung (IWF) der Österreichischen Akademie der Wissenschaften hat erstmals nachgewiesen, dass es in der Weltraumumgebung der Erde einen natürlichen "Dynamo" gibt – also einen Prozess, der von selbst elektrische Ströme und damit auch Magnetfelder erzeugt. Bisher gab es dafür nur theoretische Vorhersagen. Den ersten experimentellen Nachweis dafür lieferten nun Daten der NASA-Mission MMS. Die Ergebnisse wurden kürzlich in der Fachzeitschrift Nature Communications veröffentlicht.

Exoplanet WASP-18 b jetzt in 3D

In der Fachzeitschrift Nature Astronomy präsentiert ein internationales Team die erste dreidimensionale Temperaturkarte eines Exoplaneten. Mithilfe von Beobachtungen durch das James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) wurde bei dem "ultraheißen Jupiter" WASP-18 b eine Atmosphäre mit unterschiedlichen Temperaturzonen enthüllt – eine davon ist so heiß, dass sie Wasserdampf zersetzt. Die Analyse und Interpretation der Atmosphäre erfolgten unter der Leitung des Grazer Instituts für Weltraumforschung (IWF) der Österreichischen Akademie der Wissenschaften.
