In June 2025, the first conference on global technology assessment took place in Vienna. TA experts from all continents contributed to the success of this three-day event. ITA now presents its main outcomes as an anthology comprising selected conference papers, additionally solicited chapters and overarching conclusions to document the current state and discuss future directions of technology assessment worldwide.

Technology assessment has been established worldwide, although it varies considerably from country to country and from continent to continent, in terms of its institutional, thematic and methodological approaches. The 6th European TA Conference (ETAC6) focused on TA, its institutions, networks, projects and approaches, from a global perspective.

Held at the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Vienna in June 2025, the conference was attended by over 160 experts from around the world – from Fiji to Chile, and from Canada to Korea. In a hybrid format, we discussed the present and future of TA.

The ITA team is now compiling conference proceedings in three parts: (1) the current state of TA worldwide, (2) key issues for global TA, and (3) themes and methods for global TA. The volume will be published in early 2027 open access in the series ‘Society – Technology – Environment’, funded by ITAS in Karlsruhe and published by Nomos.
