CAROLINGIAN KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT IN THE MARGIN

Mariken Teeuwen is Professor for ‘Culture of Writing in the Middle Ages’ at the Institute for History, Leiden University.
Abstract: The margin of medieval manuscripts reveals how readers and students used their books, how they read their books and worked with the texts they found in them. They allow us to look over their shoulder and observe their methods, their interests and disinterests. In this paper, I shall share observations about annotated books from the Carolingian period. I shall focus on what I call the “four c’s” of Carolingian knowledge management: collect, connect, compare and criticize.
