In this pro-seminar in Central Eurasian Studies, we will use the framework of performative tradition in order to investigate the diversity of cultural practices across this large region, and at the invocation of these traditions in the framing of geopolitical futures over time. Looking at phenomena from music to language and script, from art to religion and sacred spaces, and from epic poetry to protest and activism, we ask how spaces of ‘culture’ are continually made and re-made by practitioners, politicians, and populations alike under imperial, socialist, and national rule. In every unit of our study, we consider as well as how Central Eurasian artists must always be understood as members of broader global(izing) communities. How is power built upon the legitimacy of expressive culture? How have diversity and cultural connection been diminished by territorial and ethnic division? How in turn can performers speak back to those in power today, and use their artistic spaces to imagine a plural future for the region?

In addition to an historical overview of these issues over recent centuries, students will apply these frameworks and knowledge to the investigation of contemporary political issues in the region, ranging from environmental activism, to language politics, to protest against political corruption, and the subversion of ‘traditional’ gender roles. In addition to readings and discussion, students will be tasked with focused presentations highlighting the expressive diversity of the region, and with related essays exploring specific musical groups of their choosing, as well as art and performance-activist collectives. Students should expect an intensive ‘deep dive’ into the social and historical life of the region, one that will hopefully spark further exploration and engagement in the future!
