Manuscript Studies in a Eurasian Context

My research focuses on the transmission of Syriac literature, including both translations from Greek into Syriac and from Syriac into Arabic. I study how texts – especially medical, philosophical, and religious – circulated across linguistic and confessional boundaries in the ancient and medieval Near East. Much of my work is based on Syriac manuscripts and palimpsests, which often preserve earlier layers of writing that shed light on forgotten or fragmentary traditions. I’m particularly interested in how multilingualism, scribal activity, and changing political contexts shaped what texts were preserved, how they were adapted, and how they moved between communities. This work aims to better understand the practical conditions and limitations of communication and knowledge exchange in the premodern world.
