Strengthening Trust in Science: CMC at the Austrian ERA Symposium 2025

The Science Communication and Science Journalism (SCSJ) working group, led by Andreas Scheu, was invited to speak at the Austrian ERA Symposium 2025: Towards Europe’s Fifth Freedom', taking place on 17 November 2025 at TechGate Vienna. Hosted by the Federal Ministry for Women, Science and Research, this full-day event brought together leading figures from Austria's science, research and innovation sectors, as well as high-level European Commission representatives and interested guests.

Johanna Klausing contributed to the workshop “Strengthening Trust in Science: Ways to enhance public participation”, alongside:

  • Christopher Lindinger (Science Communication Center)
  • Petra Siegele (OeAD GmbH – Austria’s Agency for Education and Internationalisation)
  • Anastasia Deligkiaouri (Joint Research Centre, European Commission)
  • Maria Kronfeldner (Central European University)

In an era characterised by perceived social polarisation and growing scepticism towards scientific evidence, the workshop explored how science communication and participatory formats can foster trust, enable dialogue and strengthen democratic engagement. Discussions focused on approaches that enhance the transparency, relevance and accessibility of scientific processes, ranging from effective communication strategies to citizen science initiatives.

The workshop offered space for reflection, networking and the development of innovative ways to bring society and research closer together!

Johanna Klausing nahm am ERA-Symposium 2025 in Wien teil. Dort hielt sie einen Vortrag in einem Workshop. Der Workshop trug den Titel „Vertrauen in die Wissenschaft stärken“. In dem Workshop ging es darum, wie Menschen der Wissenschaft besser vertrauen können und wie die öffentliche Teilhabe gestärkt werden kann. Wichtig sind dabei gute Erklärungen, eine klare Sprache und Gespräche zwischen Forschung und Bürgerinnen und Bürgern. Es nahmen viele Expertinnen und Experten aus Österreich und Europa teil. Unser Ziel ist, dass Wissenschaft für alle verständlich und zugänglich ist. Darum bemühen wir uns, auch Texte in Leichter Sprache anzubieten.
