Ö1 Journal-Panorama: Science Between Trust & Scepticism

On 8 October 2025, Andreas Scheu (CMC) took part in an engaging discussion alongside Christian Bertsch (Institute of Science and Technology Austria, ISTA) and Sigrid Stagl (Vienna University of Economics and Business, Scientist of the Year 2024). Together, they explored why parts of society show scepticism or disinterest towards science, whether such criticism is justified and how research can be communicated more clearly in times of social media and conspiracy theories.

When asked “How widespread is scepticism toward science in Austria?”, Andreas Scheu explained:

“In Austria, the Science Barometer measures relatively high levels of trust. Nevertheless, there is a relatively stable segment of the Austrian population that is sceptical about science. However, not all scepticism is equally problematic. Critical questioning is an integral part of both democracy and science.”
