There are good reasons for incentivizing or even mandating to make research data publicly available and, thus, to foster transparency of research and the reuse of data. However, data requires methodologically sound analysis and theoretically grounded interpretation to prevent it from being misinterpreted—unconsciously or intentionally—or even misused for political purposes, which can potentially happen when data is published without context. Data misuse is likely to slow down scientific progress and lower public trust in science and its institutions. This discussion therefore focuses on the question of how data misuse could be prevented and the open access principle could be implemented responsibly.
