Buddhist literature in context: India, Tibet, China

The present project was conceived as a stage in a long-term research enterprise that pursues a twofold aim:

1) One aim was to provide the inter­national scholarly community with carefully produced diplomatic and critical editions of a number of major works of eminent In­dian Buddhist scholar-monks that became available through an agreement between the Austrian Academy of Sciences (AAS) and the China Ti­betology Research Center (CTRC), which was signed in 2004 for a period of three years and has since been extending repeatedly in further three-year agreements, as well as to support working towards maintaining and possibly enlarging the cooperation with the CTRC. The works selected for editing were Jinendrabuddhi's Viśālāmalavatī Pramāṇasamuccayaṭīkā, Dharmakīrti's Hetubindu, Dharmottara's Pramāṇaviniścayaṭīkā, Candrakīrti's Madhya­ma­kā­va­tāra,Sthiramati’s Abhidharmakośaṭīkā Tattvārthavyākhyā,Ratnākaraśānti’s Prajñāpāramitopadeśa, Samayavajra’s Pañcakramapañjikā, Abhayākaragupta’s Pañcakramatātparyapañjikā, andŚāntarakṣita’s Tattvasiddhi.

2) Another aim was to provide translations and studies of topics characteristic of the religio-philosophical tradition of Buddhism and its context that are based on the original texts and/or their transla­tions into Tibetan and Chinese. Envisioned were partial translations and studies of Dharmakīrti's Pramāṇavārttikasvavṛtti, Dharmakīrti's Pramāṇaviniścaya, and Bhāvivekaʼs Prajñāpradīpa­mūla­madhyamaka­vṛtti.
