The project examines post-separation living arrangements of minor children in Austria, with a particular focus on differences between Vienna and other federal states. Using data from the Generations and Gender Survey 2022/23, we investigate how often children stay with their non-residential parents and how partnership contexts shape these care patterns.

The project places particular emphasis on fathers’ living situations, such as living alone or with a new partner, and how these arrangements influence the frequency of father–child contact after separation.

Key research questions include:

1. How frequently do minor children stay with their non-residential mothers or fathers?
2. Which sociodemographic, household-related, and partnership factors predict frequent, infrequent, or absent co-residence?
3. How does parental re-partnering, especially among fathers, affect post-separation contact patterns?

By providing updated empirical evidence, the project advances understanding of post-separation parenthood in Austria and offers insights relevant for family policy and regional comparison.
