RECFA visit highlights the strength and diversity of particle physics in Austria

On September 11, the Restricted European Committee for Future Accelerators (RECFA) visited Austria to review the national activities in particle physics. During the full-day meeting, representatives from universities and research institutions across Austria presented a comprehensive overview of the country’s contributions to experimental and theoretical particle physics, detector and accelerator technologies, as well as related research and education activities.

The presentations demonstrated both the high scientific quality and remarkable diversity of particle physics research in Austria. Activities range from major experiments at CERN and other international research infrastructures to theoretical physics, detector and instrumentation development, accelerator technologies, computing, and applications beyond fundamental research. The RECFA committee expressed its strong appreciation for the quality of the presentations and the broad spectrum of activities represented by the Austrian community.

An important outcome extended beyond the meeting itself. The extensive preparation process brought together particle physicists from different Austrian institutions and helped to strengthen links across institutional and disciplinary boundaries. In compiling a comprehensive picture of Austrian particle physics, several activities and potential synergies became visible that had previously not been widely known even within the national community.

The RECFA visit therefore provided not only an opportunity to present Austrian particle physics at the European level, but also an important impulse for stronger coordination and collaboration within Austria. Building on this momentum will help further strengthen the Austrian particle physics community and its contribution to future European and international research programmes.

The Marietta Blau Institute for Particle Physics (MBI) contributed to the preparation of the meeting and presented its activities in particle physics, detector development and its participation in major international experiments and European detector R&D initiatives.
