Sexuality and Gender in Schubert's Time

The commission of the newly founded Schubert Research Center at the Austrian Academy of Sciences is eager to make contacts with commited young scholars. It invites for its first Summer School, which will take place in Vienna from September 5 to 7, 2022.

This call of applications is addressed to advanced students in music history, cultural studies, and humanities who are interested in the topic "Sexuality and Gender" at the beginning of the nineteenth century. Some thirty years ago a heated debate arose about whether Franz Schubert was homosexual and, if so, what the consequences might be for an understanding of his music. We will revisit this topic in all its breadth from today's perspective and relate it to current research in an interdisciplinary way. In general, we are concerned with the problem of how far the identifications of artists around things like sexual preferences, religious and cultural orientation can be reliably determined at all. If so, we are interested in whether they are relevant in the production, reception, and interpretation of their art. Lecturers are Hans-Joachim Hinrichsen (Zurich), Mark Seow (Cambridge), Anke Charton, Waltraud Schütz, and Karin Wozonig (all Vienna). The course will be evaluated with 3 ECTS (European Credit Transfer System).

Applications should include a short prose CV, a letter of motivation, and the name of a recommender whom we can contact if necessary. The documents should be sent to the email address schubert(at)oeaw.ac.at no later than April 24, 2022. The Schubert Research Center will cover travel expenses and accommodation; the working language is English.

HERE you will find the program.
