4. JAHRESTAGUNG | 4th CONFERENCE: Nature and Landscape in Schubert’s Time. An Interdisciplinary Approach
Mi, 23.10.2024 – 25.10.2024
The relationship between nature and landscape on the one hand and the arts on the other
changed during the early nineteenth century. Due to fundamental developments in the history of
ideas, nature and landscape experienced manifold increases in significance and often served as a
reflection of the inner state of individuals and groups. These phenomena affected not only the
music of Franz Schubert, but also compositions of his contemporaries as well as literature, theater,
and the visual arts in the Habsburg Empire. This conference, therefore, encourages an
interdisciplinary approach.
We particularly invited contributions on the following topics:
relationships between the individual and nature, e.g. the motif of the “Wanderer”
the (re)discovery of nature and landscape in the Habsburg Empire, the use and instrumentalization of nature for political purposes, and the beginning of natureoriented tourism
social components of nature, e.g. urban-rural polarizations.
topics of environmentalism in Schubert’s time
ecomusicological approaches

Most of the cultural events in the Habsburg Empire during Schubert’s period were conceptualized as multi- and intermedial. In theaters and opera houses, music and dance were not the only integral parts of the performance; declamation, pantomime, costumes, lighting, and stage design also shared in the success of a production. The prime examples of this practice are mélodrame and incidental music inserted in theater plays. In public concerts, it was common to mix instrumental works with extracts from operas, interspersed with recitations of poems and sometimes enriched by tableaux vivants. The same happened in private salons, albeit on a smaller scale, where ballroom dancing played an important role as well.
In order to explore this multifaceted interconnection of the arts in greater depth than has been done before, we would like to invite not only musicologists and Schubert experts but also art historians, colleagues from theater, dance, and performance studies, literary studies, and other fields to submit papers. We are interested in case studies (including comparative studies between music centers) as well as more general contributions with a theoretical, aesthetic, or philosophical background.
Applications should include a short CV and an abstract of ca. 300 words. These materials should be sent to schubert@oeaw.ac.at no later than 16 April 2023.
The Schubert Research Center will cover travel expenses and accommodation. The conference language is English.

2. JAHRESTAGUNG | 2nd CONFERENCE: Women’s Agency in Schubert's Vienna 3.–5. November 2022
Austrian Academy of Sciences, Sonnenfelsgasse 19, Vienna
Here you can find the Program | Abstracts and the Conference Report.
The Habsburg Vormaerz era (ca. 1815-1848) is a fascinating period of transition between the ancien régime and bourgeois modernity, a time of intense negotiation of gender and class identities in a multi-religious and multilingual Monarchy. In this specific environment, women’s agency remains sorely understudied.
This is the point of departure for our conference: We aim to highlight the key role played by female artists, writers and performers, salonnières and dedicatees, female savants and entrepreneurs, who significantly shaped society and the cultural life during the era. In addition, we will give attention to charitable associations and various other sites of sociability.
We invite contributions that recover women’s scope for action and creativity: What activities did culturally interested, professionally or socially active women pursue during this time? What challenges did they face? Apart from on individual personaltities, we would particularly welcome interdisciplinary papers that explore the overarching structures and dynamics of the time.
Applications should include a short CV and an abstract of ca. 300 words. These materials should be sent to schubert(at)oeaw.ac.at no later than 22 May 2022.
The Schubert Research Center will cover travel expenses and accommodation. The conference language is English.
Guests are very welcome. In order to have the appropriate room and enough coffee available, we ask for pre-registration by 17 September: schubert(at)oeaw.ac.at (subject: annual conference)
