"For the Salvation of the Soul": Donations and Salvation in Late Antique Egypt

Gunhyuk Lee specializes in the history of Late Antique Egypt from the fourth to the eighth century, a period marked by the rapid expansion and institutional consolidation of churches and monasteries. His doctoral research examines how donations to Christian institutions increasingly came to be framed in terms of charity and explicitly linked to the salvation of the soul. Drawing on a wide range of sources, including Greek and Coptic hagiographies, inscriptions, prayers, and documentary evidence such as papyri and ostraca, including wills, private letters, and delivery orders, he investigates the evolving relationship between donation, charitable practice, and the economy of salvation in Late Antique Egyptian society.
