THUTMOSIS IV – A MISJUDGED PHARAOH?

Lecture by David Aston, OREA

After G.E. Smith, Catalogue Général des Anitquité Ègyptiennes du Musée du Caire. The Royal Mummies, Le Caire 1912, Mummy of Thutmose IV, JE 61073, pl. 30

According to all the general histories, Tuthmosis IV reigned for only 8 to 11 years, and indeed his highest (yet) known regnal year date is Year 8.  However recent discoveries, in particular, a closer look at Eighteenth Dynasty wine jar dockets suggest that he reigned for much longer.  This presentation will suggest that he reigned in excess of thirty years, and will examine the consequences of such an idea.
