URAP is a collaboration between the University of Vienna and Brown University that is studying the political border between Middle Kingdom Egypt and the Kingdom of Kush (ca. 2000 BC). The spatial centerpiece of the project is the Egyptian settlement on Uronarti (Sudan), last excavated when the Sudan was under joint Egyptian-English colonial rule (1928–29), and since the 1970´s, presumed irrecoverably lost beneath the waters of Lake Nubia/Nasser. The project aims to temper earlier "top down" models of Egyptian colonialism in Nubia that emphasised "intended colonial outcomes" by investigating the formation of a local colonial context as a complex interplay between global structures and local agency.
