For 130 years, the excavations of the Austrian Archaeological Institute have been uncovering new insights into one of the most populous cities of the Roman Empire. Today, international research teams continue to investigate the 9000-year history in a multidisciplinary way in order to better understand life in the antique metropolis. In this issue, the experts report on everything from the sanctuary of Artemis and the final resting place of the Ephesians to everyday topics such as eating habits and the use of ceramics. Ephesos was not only an important player in the ceramics market of the ancient world, but also characterised the cult landscape of the Greco-Roman Mediterranean. The goddess Artemis was the patroness of the city and the Artemision was the main shrine of Ephesos. »All cities worship the Artemis of Ephesus«, noted the 2nd century AD travel writer Pausanias.
