A new booklet presents the results of the OeAW thematic platform ‘Sciences and Archaeology’. This thematic platform was originally set up by the Austrian Academy of Sciences (OeAW) in 2018 for the years 2019–2020 as a cross-class and cross-member measure with a strongly interdisciplinary character. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, it was extended until 2022.

The background for establishing the thematic platform arose from the fact that sciences have played an important role in the study of the human past for around 180 years, even if they are adapted and received differently in the various archaeological fields. The current challenges of interdisciplinary archaeology were at the centre of the thematic platform, which provided a framework for discussing future concepts and scientific perspectives on the sciences and archaeology in the 21^st century. The traditionally strong interdisciplinary research approach to archaeology in Vienna represents the ideal prerequisite for the discussion of possible scientific findings and future scenarios in Austria, as this volume aims to reflect.
