To mark Austrian World Heritage Day, which takes place on 18 April, we are presenting a new project at the OeAI and TU Wien that combines heritage science and artificial intelligence. Using Roman pottery from Carnuntum, one of Europe’s largest archaeological landscapes and part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site »Donaulimes«, the LEGION project is developing an innovative AI method to enable faster archaeological analysis of pottery. The project is based on around 70,000 pottery drawings from decades of research.

The project is funded by the Heritage Science Austria 2.0 programme of the Austrian Academy of Sciences.
