In two volumes with more than 1200 pages, Peter Soustal, honorary collaborator of the Department for Byzantine Studies of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, covers the historical geography of the southern part of a central region of the Byzantine Empire, Macedonia. Thereby, the most important project on the spatial dimension of Byzantine history, the Tabula Imperii Byzantini (TIB), is enlarged with another building block. The volume also includes contributions by Andreas Pülz (research director at the Austrian Archaeological Institute of the Austrian Academy) and was written in cooperation with Mihailo St. Popović, who is preparing another volume of the TIB on the northern part of Macedonia.
