World Day for Glaciers

IGF researchers participated in a range of outreach activities on the first World Day for Glaciers, March 21, 2025. The Day for Glaciers was announced by the United Nations, UNESCO, and the World Meteorological Organisation as part of the UN International Year of Glaciers’ Preservation 2025 and in connection with the start of the Decade of Action for Cryospheric Sciences (2025-2034). 

Andrea Fischer discussed impacts of rapid glacier melt in the Alps in an ÖAW interview and with various media outlets:

Public outreach events were held in Galtür and Graz with in collaboration with colleagues from the Universities of Innsbruck and Graz. The IGF working group Glaciers and Permafrost contributes data from long term monitoring programs to the World Glacier Monitoring Service and other international networks.
