Abstract

The Viennese television journalist Elizabeth T. Spira, who died in 2019, produced a total of 60 episodes of the social reportage „Alltagsgeschichte“. It was broadcasted on ORF-television between 1985 and 2005, a period that was characterised by the rise of right-wing populist parties. Conducting a qualitative content analysis of selected episodes, the aim of this project is to test the hypothesis that the protagonists in “Alltagsgeschichte”, as a result of increasing right-wing populist rhetoric in politics, show less reluctance to make anti-Semitic, xenophobic, sexist etc. statements in public over time.
