Founded in 1976 the Institute of Demography of the Austrian Academy of Sciences has grown into one of Europe’s leading centres for demographic research and, since 2002, has carried the international name Vienna Institute of Demography - VID.
To mark this special occasion, we warmly invite you to join us for a symposium at the Festive Hall of the Austrian Academy of Sciences
where we will reflect on the history of our institute, present our current research, and share our visions for the future of demographic research.
The morning programme will focus on the history and development of the institute, including the presentation of the new comprehensive volume The Vienna School of Demography, edited by Marc Luy and Wolfgang Lutz.
The programme will also feature a keynote lecture by Anna Rosling Rönnlund who is known as co-author of the bestseller “Factfulness: Ten Reasons We're Wrong About the World – and Why Things Are Better Than You Think”.
The afternoon will be dedicated to recent highlights from our research groups and the future of the institute. Through talks and poster presentations, we will showcase our main research areas and current as well as planned future projects.
We will also take this opportunity to present our new book “How we live, love, and age: Population research for our future”, which aims to bring the topic of demography closer to a broader audience and explains our work in an accessible and engaging way (for readers without a scientific background).
The day will be concluded with the panel discussion “Demographic Ageing and What Lies Ahead of Us” bringing together leading international experts in demography and population research:
Moderation: Andreas Edel, Population Europe / Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research
We would be delighted if you could join us in Vienna — or online via livestream — for a day dedicated to demography and demographic research!
