Biographical sketch

Daniel studied biology at the University of Freiburg and completed his PhD with Roland Eils at the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) in Heidelberg, where he developed computational tools to study how cells reorganize during division. He then moved to EMBL Heidelberg, where his work helped reveal how chromosomes move along the mitotic spindle and how the cohesin and condensin complexes shape chromosome architecture. In 2006, he established his independent research group as an Assistant Professor at ETH Zurich, and in 2012 he joined IMBA as a Senior Group Leader. His research explores how genomes are organized, maintained, and transmitted in living cells, combining technology development with curiosity-driven basic science across disciplines.
