BASIC INFORMATION ON THE WORK AREA (WA) CLIMATE

The WA Climate is a working group of the OeAW Commission on Climate and Air Quality (KKL), whose members are experts in climate research from various disciplines in the natural sciences, social sciences and law. The development and expansion of the WA with selected highly qualified members has been ongoing since its foundation.

The WA understands the term "climate research" to mean the scientific investigation of climate change in a comprehensive sense. Starting from physical climate research ("Physical Science Basis"), the WA also deals with the political, economic and social causes of climate change ("Human Causes of Climate Change"), with its impacts and consequences in the environment, economy and society ("Impacts, Vulnerability, Risks") as well as with strategies for climate protection ("Mitigation"), for adaptation to climate change ("Adaptation") and for dealing with loss and damage ("Loss&Damage").
In addition to the synopsis and interdisciplinary exchange to stimulate and promote excellent scientific work, scientifically sound advice for society, economy and politics also plays an important role in the work. The WA contributes with activities such as public events and statements.

The Climate Expert Group of the OeAW also works closely with the institutional Austrian Climate Research Network CCCA on many activities. For example, the OeAW is an institutional member of the CCCA and is represented by WA experts nominated by the OeAW Presidium. Furthermore, a member of the WA is delegated by the OeAW Presidium as a representative of science to the National Climate Protection Committee (NKK) according to §4 of the Climate Protection Act, as well as a deputy.
