SHORT BIOGRAPHY

Lisa M. Gottschall is a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute of Social Anthropology at the Austrian Academy of Sciences. She studied Cultural and Social Anthropology, History, and Social Work in Vienna. Her research interests encompass the history of science, particularly the history of ethnology and anthropology, as well as the history of racism, antisemitism, colonialism, and the Holocaust, along with women's and gender history.

Her first monograph (2024) traces the scientific careers of Viennese researchers who, during the Nazi occupation of Poland, were active in a politically applied research institution. Through ideologically guided investigations of the local population, they contributed to the preparation of the regime's "ethnic reorganization plans." Source studies in archives in Austria, Germany, Poland, and the United States form the basis of her work. Her current research project examines ethnological-anthropological surveys of African prisoners of war in Wehrmacht camps during World War II.

Trained as a social worker, Lisa M. Gottschall worked in the social sector in Vienna for several years. Her primary field of activity (among others) was the psychosocial counseling of survivors of National Socialist persecution and their descendants. After transitioning to research, she continues to volunteer in various fields of social work.
