Tonga pressure wave reaches Austria’s glaciers

Wave arrival at 19:50 UTC; Graphic by Lea Hartl and Martin Stocker-Waldhuber

Like other weather stations around the world, our automatic weather station on Weissseespitze recorded the shockwave caused by the massive underwater volcanic eruption in Tonga - South Pacific Ocean. The pressure wave travelled outward from Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai volcano and arrived at Weissseespitze in Tyrol on Saturday evening at 19:50. It is clearly visible in the graph as a perturbation of about 1.5 hPa.
