Abstract:
Her Voice, Their Story; Our History is an interdisciplinary winter school that introduces students to the foundations of women’s and gender history. What is it, and why is it crucial for understanding our past and present? Who decides which stories are remembered, and whose voices remain hidden or forgotten? Through a dynamic combination of lectures, hands-on sessions with historical sources, group work, and lively conversations about the role of history in public life, students will engage with voices and experiences that have long been marginalized or left out of traditional historical narratives.
How can we uncover women’s perspectives in archives shaped by patriarchy, colonialism, and systems of power? What new insights do these recovered stories offer — and how do they challenge dominant understandings of history? Together, we will explore the methods and approaches historians use to find and interpret women’s voices, examine the stories those voices tell, and reflect on how these narratives continue to shape the way we understand identity, power, resistance, and social change today.
Drawing on rich case studies from around the world—including from Europe, Asia, Australia, and Africa—this course offers a global, intersectional lens on the power and politics of historical storytelling. Students will critically analyze how gender intersects with race, class, sexuality, and colonial histories to influence who is remembered and how. Ultimately, participants will be encouraged to ask not only how history is written, but who gets to write it — and why it matters for the past, present, and future.
