We are pleased to welcome Jana Lasser, Professor for Data Analysis to lecture on "Collective moderation of hate, toxicity, and extremity in online discussions", including Q&A.
Abstract: How can citizens effectively address hate and toxicity in online discourse? In this talk, we explore the dynamics of hate speech and discourse quality in online discussions, drawing on a comprehensive analysis of over 130,000 Twitter discussions spanning four years. Using a combination of human annotation, machine learning classifiers, and statistical modelling, we examine how different counter speech strategies influence the likelihood of hate speech and other negative outcomes in subsequent interactions.
Short bio: Jana Lasser is professor for Data Analysis at the IDea_Lab at the University of Graz, where she leads the research group on complex social & computational systems. She researchers emergent phenomena in complex social systems, employing methods from machine learning, data science, natural language processing, and computational and statistical modelling to understand how humans behave in socio-technical environments.
