Online Science Talk - Francesca Ferlaino, Physikerin, Wissenschafterin des Jahres

We are pleased to welcome Francesca Ferlaino, Professor for Quantum Physics, Institut für Experimentalphysik, Universität Innsbruck, and IQOQI - Institut für Quantenoptik und Quanteninformation, Österreichische Akademie der Wissenschaften, Innsbruck, to lecture on "Quantum Science Developments and Their Impact on Future Technologies", including Q&A.

Abstract: Approaching temperatures close to absolute zero, atoms develop exceptional behaviors: from tiny spheres, they begin to behave like waves of matter delocalized in space. A hundred years ago, this counterintuitive concept revolutionized the way scientists think, triggering the so-called First Quantum Revolution. Over the past decade, continuous discoveries are propelling our community towards a second quantum revolution: learning how to exploit quantum mechanical properties for future technologies. This presentation will provide an overview and examples in the field of ultracold atomic gases, describing new states of matter and their applications to quantum simulations.
