Demographie

Das auf Englisch geführte Seminar "Demography matters: the scientific discipline about human life from birth to death" am neuen Akademie-Campus führt interaktiv in die aktuellen Forschungsfragen der Demographie.

Zeitraum: 28.–30. September 2022 (Anreise am 27. September 2022)
Dauer: 3 Tage
Ort: Österreichische Akademie der Wissenschaften, Neuer Campus, Postgasse, 1010 Wien
Sprache: Englisch
Zahl der Teilnehmer/innen: 20–25
Wissenschaftliche Leitung: Dr. Marc Luy in Zusammenarbeit mit Univ.-Prof. Alexia Fürnkranz-Prskawetz, Dr. Paola Di Giulio, Dr. Miguel Sanchez-Romero (Österreichische Akademie der Wissenschaften, Institut für Demographie - VID)

Kurzbeschreibung: Demography is a fascinating discipline that deals with the lives of people from birth to death. The central goal of demography is the statistical description of human populations in terms of their demographic structure (the number of the population: its composition by sex, age, and other characteristics such as education or marital status) at a given point in time and the demographic events that take place within them (births, deaths, marriages, etc.). In recent decades, demographers have expanded their research from the population level to the micro level (i.e., individual human lives). This expansion has been accompanied by an increasing connection to other disciplines concerned with human life, such as sociology, psychology, economics, and political science from the social sciences, and medicine or biology from the natural sciences. The workshop will provide students with an overview of demography in general and insights into the most exciting research questions currently being addressed. The first part of the seminar will introduce the discipline itself, including its historical development, interdisciplinary ties, and the most powerful demographic tool of population projections. Students will participate in a workshop that introduces the challenges and opportunities that arise from collecting demographic data. Later in the seminar, key researchers from the Vienna Institute of Demography of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and cooperating institutions of the Wittgenstein Centre for Demography and Global Human Capital will present the latest and currently ongoing projects in their demographic research areas, which are essential for understanding demographic processes and providing a solid basis for population projections. The lectures will be interactive and students' participation with questions and reflections is encouraged. An important feature of the workshop over all three days will be the opportunity for students to interact with researchers. In an open and relaxed atmosphere between sessions, students will be able to ask more specific questions about demographic research and the working lives of researchers in this research area.
