Titel: Problems and Perspectives in Geomathematics

Abstract:

Gravitational, seismic and magnetic data of the Earth are available to a very large extent. For this reason, geoscientists use them as a standard source for inferring inaccessible structures and processes of the system Earth. Usually, these deductions are connected to severely ill-posed inverse problems, which can be mathematically challenging from the numerical and the theoretical point-of-view.

This talk discusses some examples from the analysis of gravitational and seismic data as well as a related problem in medical imaging. Some methodology which has been developed by the Geomathematics Group Siegen is also demonstrated. Moreover, outlooks on further and partially insufficiently solved problems are given.
