Any continuous piecewise-linear function F:R-n -> R can be represented as a linear combination of maxima of at most n+1 affine-linear functions. This upper bound is sharp, that is, for every n there exists such a function that is not a linear combination of maxima of n arguments. In this paper, we give a method to determine, for any given such F , the minimal number k such that F can be written as a linear combination of maxima of k arguments.
