Techniques
H2O: Granular H2O ice can be produced by crushing solid blocks into smaller pieces (in the millimeter-size range), or by dispersing liquid H2O with different techniques: pressurized air and nozzle (mean particle radius: μm), ultrasonic-bath (mean particle radius: μm), or vibrating mesh (mean particle radius: μm). Core-mantle particles can be produced by spraying a suspension of H2O and dust (organic, or silicate). Due to the production process of the H2O-ice samples, the structure of the material will be crystalline.
CO2: Solid and coarse CO2 ice can be purchased in various sizes and shapes, ranging from slices with several decimeters in size to millimeter-sized CO2-ice particles. In order to obtain smaller, fine-grained CO2-ice particles, we will spray pressurized liquid CO2 through a nozzle (Snow Station from Linde Gas; this setup is available in the laboratory). Adiabatic expansion causes the particles to freeze. First tests with this device have shown that typical size of the produced CO2-ice particles is in the range of several micrometers.
Tholins: tholins are produced in the gas phase within reactors, or within ices by several groups in the world (the production of tholins will be performed in collaboration with N. Carrasco and C. Szopa, LATMOS, Paris). Unfortunately, the low production rate of these materials currently precludes their use for large experiments.
