The philosophy of this project is to address the top-level science questions via a set of multi-laboratory experiments and thermophysical modeling, building from small-scale studies of individual properties up to large, more sophisticated, experiments. The small-scale (S) experiments performed locally at each partner laboratory will benefit from the knowledge and equipment available in the respective laboratories. Joint medium-scale (M) experiments performed in Braunschweig will combine the results of the S experiments and the expertise and experimental equipment from each laboratory. The final large-scale (L) experiments - also performed in Braunschweig - will be a set of large-scale, state-of-the-art, simulation experiments, combining all the knowledge, available equipment, techniques and protocols developed in earlier experiments. The samples will be prepared by a bottom-up approach, with a sample complexity that increases step-by-step by adding additional components, or changing the morphology of the material. This philosophy ensures that not too many sample properties are varied between experiment runs.
