Funding: FWF Weave Project - PIN9082923
Project Leader (ARI): Holger Waubke
Project Partners:
Henri Siller, Gert Herold, Timo Schumacher, Maria Hochkirch - DLR (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt)
Martin Ochman, Karc Kirch, Jan Simon - BHT (Berliner Hochschule für Technik)
Reto Pieren, Sophia Feriani - EMPA (Eidgenössisches Materialprüfamt)
The PI is Henri Siller from the DLR. He is engaged with the detection of acoustic sources at airplanes using microphone arrays and is improving the measurement methods. Martin Ochmann and Holger Waubke are engaged with computational acoustics. Holger Waubke is doing recordings of train pass-bys with a microphone array. The EMPA team are specialists for the simulation of acoustic waves in air.
The partners in the LION project have worked on new approaches and more efficient ways of processing microphone array data for moving sources in the first three years of the project from 2020 to 2023 (LION) and continue their cooperation for a second project phase from 2025 to 2028 (LION2).
The motivation for the DACH project LION was to pool the expertise of acoustic research groups in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland to develop advanced method for the localization and analysis of moving sources of sound, especially on trains and aircraft in flight. The scientific discipline of acoustic source localization has been very active for the last 25 years with a rapid development of advanced methods that have improved the spatial resolution and dynamic range compared to the traditional sum-and-delay beamforming methods. Today, a large variety of methods is available, however mostly restricted to stationary sources of sound. For moving sources of sound, the spectral content of the signal changes over time so that the efficient analysis methods in the frequency domain that exist for stationary sources cannot be applied.
