The Young Academy actively contributes to strengthening innovative research and the promotion of young researchers. The members aim to create work and research conditions that make career paths possible at a very high international level. Moreover, it supports the advancement of women, gender mainstreaming and diversity management. Its strategic goals are the promotion of interdisciplinary research and the identification of innovative research fields. To reach these goals the Young Academy has comprehensive participation rights. The Young Academy has up to 70 members who are elected for a maximum duration of eight years and must be below 45 years of age. It was installed in 2007/08 as part of the ÖAW’s reform process. 

Stefan Ameres is group leader at the Institute for Molecular Biotechnology (IMBA) since 2012 and investigates the function of small silencing RNAs. "It is very important to participate in the scientific landscape and the Young Academy is a good forum," says Ameres.

The new members will officially receive their degrees during the ceremonial meeting on October 15, 2015.
