Nol9 is a novel polynucleotide 5'-kinase involved in ribosomal RNA processing

09.11.2010

Ribosomes are large ribonucleoproteins that translate the genetic information from RNA into protein. Therefore, protein production is fully dependent on the sufficient availability of the components of ribosomes, ribosomal proteins and ribosomal RNAs (rRNAs). We have identified a novel RNA 5’-kinase, Nol9, which is required for efficient biogenesis of the large ribosomal subunit RNAs, 5.8S and 28S rRNAs, in human cells. Depletion of Nol9 leads to a severe decrease of the 60S large ribosomal subunit and consequently the mature ribosome.
