Long Night of Research – April 27th, 2012

IMBA takes part in the Long Night of Research, Austria’s biggest science event with more than 1.000 stations. The evening is aimed at raising the acceptance of research in the public and motivating younger generations for a career in science. Guests can get insights into recent topics on three different stations. The most adventurous ones can also try out experiments themselves. Stations from all other partners of the Campus Vienna Biocenter can also be visited.

The three stations at IMBA (detailed explanations only available in German):
 

  • Heart Attack and Cancer under the Microscope

At this station visitors get an overview of histological techniques, have the chance to stain tissue samples and examine them under the microscope. Afterwards a „self-made diagnosis“ will hopefully identify the underlying disease. 

  • Genetics and Art – A Symbiosis

 

In collaboration with the University of Applied Arts Vienna four student projects were realized at the IMBA. The young artists are introduced at this station. Interested guests have the opportunity to take part in a  guided tour  with  detailed explanation by the students themselves.

 

  • RNA-Interference: Hot Topic for Tomorrow’s Medicine

Scientists at this station explain why RNA-interference serves as an integral part of modern genetics. Moreover visitors will gain insight into this powerful technique and learn about the role it might play for tomorrow’s medicine.
