Forschungsinteresse

Der Forschungsschwerpunkt von Margreth Keiler liegt auf der Dynamik von Naturgefahren in Gebirgsregionen im Kontext des globalen Wandels, insbesondere auf den Auswirkungen von Klima- und Landnutzungsänderungen auf Gefahrenprozesse und die Gesellschaft. Ein zentrales Interesse gilt dem Verständnis der Entwicklung von Risiken und Resilienz durch die Wechselwirkungen zwischen biogeophysikalischen und gesellschaftlichen Systemen sowie der Erfassung und Analyse anhand von Modellen gekoppelter Mensch-Landschaft-Systeme. In ihrer Arbeit kombiniert sie innovative Methoden und interdisziplinäre Ansätze, darunter maschinelles Lernen, räumliche Modellierung und transdisziplinäre Wissens-Koproduktion, um die Gefahren- und Risikoforschung voranzutreiben und eine nachhaltige und adaptive Risikogovernance in Gebirgsregionen zu unterstützen.

Laufbahn

Margreth Keiler studierte Geographie und Erdwissenschaften an den Universitäten Innsbruck und Aberdeen. Im September 2004 promovierte sie an der Universität Innsbruck. Anschließend forschte und lehrte sie am Institut für Geographie und Regionalforschung der Universität Wien. Forschungsaufenthalte führten sie an die University of Exeter (UK), das Santa Fe Institute (USA) sowie als Fulbright-Gastprofessorin an die Duke University (USA). Von August 2011 bis Februar 2021 leitet sie die Gruppe Geomorphologie, Naturgefahren- und Risikoforschung am Geographischen Institut der Universität Bern. 2012 habilitierte sie an den Universitäten Wien und Bern, wo sie 2017 zur Assoziierten Professorin befördert wurde. Von 2014 bis 2021 war sie Forscherin im Mobiliar Lab für Naturrisiken am Oeschger-Zentrum für Klimawandelforschung der Universität Bern und übernahm ab 2016 auch die Co-Leitung des Labs.

Seit März 2021 ist sie, parallel zu ihrer Funktion als Direktorin und Leiterin der Arbeitsgruppe „Coupled Human-Landscape Systems: Risk and Resilience“, auch Professorin am Institut für Geographie der Universität Innsbruck. Margreth Keiler ist Executive Editor der Zeitschrift Natural Hazards and Earth System Sciences, Mitglied des Editor-in-Chief-Teams der Zeitschrift eco.mont sowie des Science Leadership Council der Mountain Research Initiative.
