Abstract

In this paper, I discuss the prepositional possessive compounds and prepositional governing compounds with exocentric semantics found in Avestan and Old Persian. The analysis focuses on their derivational morphology and their meaning.
I conclude that the oldest governing compounds have introduced thematization of the second member, whereas possessive compounds probably did not add any suffix to an athematic second member. These conclusions confirm Sadovski’s findings for Vedic Sanskrit and allow us to reconstruct the Proto-Indo-Iranian situation, albeit for a restricted number of lexemes.
