Hybride lecture by Tijana Krstić | Central European University 

Abstract

Among the many books that the soldiers from the Habsburg-led army raided from Ottoman Buda in 1686, which subsequently ended up in different libraries across Europe (with the majority today in the Marsili collection in Bologna), were the books that once constituted the personal collection of Süleyman Efendi, the preacher (vā'iẓ) of the Grand Mosque of Buda between c. 1643 and 1655. Based on the reconstruction of this collection, but especially the content of three personal notebooks (mecmū'a) and various marginal notes found within them, the talk will explore Süleyman Efendi's background, training, Sufi affiliation, outlook as a preacher, as well as insights into his congregation in Ottoman Buda.
